A lot of students ask us which are the right books to prepare for GATE Architecture (AR) exam. Here is what we suggest.
Books available off the shelf in book shops:You will find many a books or guides in bookshops by various authors / publications. These books claim that they are complete preparation guide to GATE Architecture (AR) with past exam papers. Normally, these books are around a 1000 pages. In our opinion, these books are NOT comprehensive for GATE Architecture (AR) and can be used merely as reference guides. GATE Architecture (AR) is not an exam whose theory and practice questions can be crunched in a single book.
Engineering College Books:These are the best books to study and learn the subject. Make sure that the author is the best in the field. While these books are excellent in explaining theory and also provide sufficient practice questions, these are not written for GATE Architecture (AR). So you may not know what to focus on and also may end up spending much more time then what is required to prepare a subject.
Course Material for GATE Architecture (AR):Career Avenues GATE Architecture (AR) faculty has very carefully selected and summarized all concepts that are required in GATE Architecture (AR) exam. Our study material covers all concepts and practice questions. All concepts tested in last 10 years of GATE Architecture (AR) have been well illustrated. So instead of reading an excellent engineering college book (which may be over 1000 pages for each subject), it is better to read focused GATE Architecture (AR) material with practice questions. For more information on our Course Material, please refer to the courses for your branch of Engineering under the head GATE Architecture (AR) Preparation. Tips To Crack GATE Architecture (AR) Exam

5 Very Important & Best Tips To Crack GATE Architecture (AR)

Tips to Crack GATE Architecture (AR)
1. Diagnostic Test:Before you start preparing for GATE Architecture (AR), it is very important for you to know what are you preparing for. Also you should know where you stand and what is the goal you need to reach. So taking a diagnostic test is a must. The best diagnostic test is a previous year GATE Architecture (AR) paper answered with seriousness.
2. Right Resources:Students have tendency to collect material and tests from different sources. It is important that you keep one source as your main source and do a minimum 80-90% of your preparation from that source. Studying the subject from multiple resources induces unnecessary confusion and is also a waste of time. So just follow material from one good source, like Career Avenues Study Material, which is comprehensive.
3. Do Not Overdo Concepts:Most Students spend a huge amount of their preparation time on “fundamentals”. While concepts are important, do not spend too much of time on that. We advise a time split of 50-50 between concepts and questions. Remember, when you are answering questions, you will need to come back to fundamentals to check what you have missed or what you are answering incorrectly.
4. Test, Tests & Tests:When you prepare for the Olympics race, you run a lot of practice races. Similarly, while preparing for GATE Architecture (AR), it is important to answer a good number of topic based tests seriously, sitting in front of a computer, and using the online scientific calculator.
5. Analysis – Paralysis:Analyse your tests to identify areas you still need to learn or focus on. Also analysis helps based on your strengths and weaknesses. At the same time, do not over analyse and waste time. All good online test series platforms, like the CAREER AVENUES platform, automatically do a large part of the analysis you require.

GATE Scoring System

Every GATE aspirant comes across this doubt as GATE is conducted for 25+ papers and there is talk of marks as well as scores.

So why and how exactly the scores are calculated; what is the GATE Scoring System? GATE Scoring System (Normalization Process) is the methodology used to convert the raw marks of the candidates into scores after computing according to the specifications prescribed by the GATE authorities.

GATE is conducted in 25+ papers out of which 5 papers namely ME, CE, CS, EC and EE are held in multiple sessions (two or three) as the number of applicants for these papers are very high and the exam cannot be held for these in a single session. The rest of the GATE papers have relative lesser number of candidates and therefore don’t require to be held in multiple sessions.

GATE Scoring System (Normalization) will be different for the single session and multiple session GATE papers. While the raw marks of the single session GATE papers will be used for computing the GATE scores, the actual marks for multiple sessions will be normalized and these normalized marks will be used to compute the GATE scores.
For all those papers conducted in single session, only actual GATE marks will be considered to calculate the GATE Score.

So let’s dig-in a bit more and try to de-mystify the GATE Scoring System to understand how the GATE scores are calculated.

For all multi-session papers, the following three parameters calculated to obtain the result of each candidate:

  • Actual GATE Marks
  • Normalized GATE Marks
  • GATE Score

For all single session papers, the following two parameters defined in the result of each candidate:

  • Actual GATE Marks
  • GATE Score
Actual GATE Marks:For multiple choice questions, 1 mark is awarded for every correct answer, and 1/3 mark is deducted for every incorrect answer. There is no negative marking in case of numerical questions. GATE actual (raw) marks are awarded out of a total of 100 marks, for around 65 questions.
Normalized GATE Marks:The normalization is done based on the fundamental assumption that “in all multi-session GATE papers, the distribution of abilities of candidates is the same across all the sessions”. This assumption is justified since the number of candidates appearing in multi-session papers in GATE is large and the procedure of allocation of session to candidates is random. Further it is also ensured that for the same multi-session paper, the number of candidates allotted in each session is of the same order of magnitude. Based on the above, and considering various normalization methods, the committee arrived at the following formula for calculating the normalized marks for the multi-session papers.
GATE Marks Normalization:After the evaluation of the answers, the raw marks obtained by a candidate are converted into a normalized GATE Score.
For multi-session papers such as CE, CS, EC, EE, and ME in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), a normalization process is applied to ensure fairness across different sessions.
The normalized marks of the j-th candidate in the i-th session, denoted as Mᵢⱼ, are calculated using a formula that considers:
the actual marks obtained by the candidate,
the average marks of the top 0.1% of candidates across all sessions, and
the sum of the mean and standard deviation of marks of candidates in the paper across all sessions, among other statistical parameters.
After this calculation, normalized marks are obtained from the raw marks, and the GATE Score is then calculated based on these normalized marks.
GATE Score:GATE score is calculated out of 1000. This GATE score computed based on the marks (normalized) obtained by the candidate and mean marks of top 0.1% or top 10 of the candidates who appeared in the same paper including multi-sessions.
GATE Score Calculation:For all papers for which there is only one session (like GATE Architecture), actual marks obtained will be used for calculating the GATE Score. GATE score will be calculated using the GATE Score formula, that takes into account marks obtained by the candidate (actual marks for single session papers and normalized marks for multi-session papers), the qualifying marks for general category candidate in the paper, the mean of marks of top 0.1% or top 10 (whichever is larger) of the candidates who appeared in the paper (in case of multi-session papers including all sessions) and various other factors like mean and the standard deviation of marks of all the candidates who appeared in the paper. The GATE Committee has the authority to decide the qualifying mark/score for each GATE paper.

Best Test Series For GATE Architecture (AR) Exam Preparation In India

There are many good Test Series for GATE Architecture (AR) Exam Preparation. But student should be able to identify the good and the not so good test series before making a purchase.

The key points to note are –

  1. Many Test Series are very tough and are not of GATE Architecture (AR) level. Most Questions of GATE Architecture (AR) can be solved in maximum of 3-4 minutes. But if a test series gives questions which a student will take many steps to calculate and 8-10 minutes to solve, then test series is not having GATE Architecture (AR) type of questions.
  2. Many institutes who train both for GATE and government level exams mix questions from both types of tests.
This is not a good test series as the type and style of questions of both exams are different. Or they include a lot of previous year GATE questions. As students may have solved these GATE questions during their theoretical preparation, it creates a bias in the scientific assessment.
  3. Blocking Test Series:
Some institutes have a practice of blocking your test series if you do not submit your GATE Admit Card details. This is an illegal practice. When you have purchased a product, at no point does any institute have the right to block access on such frivolous grounds.
  4. CAREER AVENUES provides an excellent Test Series for the GATE Architecture (AR) Branch.

Here are the features of Career Avenues GATE Architecture (AR) Test Series.

  1. GATE Architecture (AR) like platform including virtual calculator.
  2. Strong GATE Architecture (AR) test analysis that help you understand your strong and weak areas.

  • Questions types are MCQ, MSQ and Numerical Questions of either or 2 marks.
  • MCQ: Each of these questions will contain four options/answers. Out of four, one correct answer is to be marked. Negative Marking Scheme is one-third the weightage of the question.
  • MSQ: Each of these questions will contain four options/answers. Out of four, one or more correct answer is to be marked. Not marking any correct answer is equivalent to answering the question incorrectly. Negative Marking Scheme: No negative marking for incorrect answer, but no marks for partly correct answers as well.
  • Numerical Question: Wherein the answer is a specific number or a range. Answer is to be entered by the aspirant/student using the mouse and a virtual keypad, which will be provided on the screen. Negative Marking Scheme: There is no negative marking for numerical answer type questions.
Question Paper Structure
Recall Questions:These are based on facts, principles, formulae or laws. The candidate is expected to be able to obtain the answer either from his memory of the subject or at most from a one-line computation.
Comprehension Questions:These questions test the candidate’s understanding of the basics of the field, by requiring him to draw simple conclusions from fundamental ideas.
Application Questions:In these questions, the candidate is expected to apply his knowledge either through computation or by logical reasoning.
Analysis and Synthesis Questions:These can be linked answer questions, where the answer to the first question of the pair is required in order to answer its successor. Or these can be common data questions, in which two questions share the same data but can be solved independently of each other.

Duration and examination type: The examination is of 3 hours duration, and contains a total of 65 questions worth a maximum of 100 marks. The questions consist of multiple choice questions, multiple select questions and numerical answer type questions Candidates are provided with scribble pads for rough work and these have to be returned after the examination. At the end of the 3-hour window, the computer automatically closes the screen from further actions.

Strategy To Prepare For GATE Architecture (AR) Exam

Good Score For GATE Architecture (We would say around 60 on a normal level of difficulty paper)

Steps And Strategy To Prepare For GATE Architecture (AR) Exam

  1. Take a diagnostic test – best diagnostic test is a GATE paper of any of the previous 3 years.
  2. Note down what you have scored and what was the actual GATE qualifying score cut-off. Note that qualification does not help you much. What you need is a good score. So note the good score mentioned above and measure the gap between your score and a good score.
  3. Note the GATE syllabus and mark your topics that you are good at. First try to master subjects that you are good at.
  4. However, some subjects like Architecture and Design, Urban Design, Urban Planning and Housing and Environmental Planning and Design have a high weightage. So you should definitely prepare these.
  5. General Aptitude does not require preparation. It requires practice. So just practice solving Aptitude questions every day for 30 minutes.
  6. Take lots of section tests and Mocks. Career Avenues provides an excellent test series for GATE Architecture (AR). For more details click here.
  7. In case you require focused GATE study material and books, you should take Career Avenues GATE Architecture (AR) study material which has been made by IIT alumni and is focused towards GATE. For more details click here.

Best Study Material For GATE Architecture (AR) Exam Preparation In India

Best Study Material For GATE Architecture (AR) Exam Preparation In India

There are two types of GATE Architecture (AR) Exam Preparation Study Material:

  1. Single Books for entire GATE Architecture (AR) Branch
    &
  2. A Set Of Books (typically broken-up subject wise) for GATE Architecture (AR) Branch.
Let us discus both types of GATE Architecture (AR) Exam Preparation Study Material
Single Books:Again, these are of two types: Only Past GATE Architecture (AR) Questions (about 200-300 pages books): These are good books to have, but many of these books have lots of errors and wrong answers. Books written by good coaching institutes are normally more reliable than those printed by general publishing companies. Theory + Questions Books (about 800-1500 pages books): These are not strongly recommended. They do not have theory in detail, and only contain brief points. These books could be partly useful while doing revision after complete GATE Architecture (AR) preparation, but not good for complete comprehensive GATE Architecture (AR) exam preparation.
Set Of Books:Normally Known As Study Material. These are very good books to prepare for GATE Architecture (AR) Exam They contain comprehensive theory focused on GATE Architecture (AR); and have lots of solved questions. But some of the coaching institutes provide limited theory. So make sure you go through the sample of the books before you purchase. CAREER AVENUES has the best Study Material for GATE Architecture (AR) Branch.
